Co. utility district still in limbo on past dues

 

County supervisors delayed action Tuesday on a request from the Tunica County Utility District for $168,000 to help the financially strapped district.

County administrator Michael Thompson said he met with the TCUD board Monday and that he was awaiting more information before making a recommendation at the July 8 Board of Supervisors meeting.

Thompson told the county board that he was researching grant funds that came to Tunica County from FEMA after the 2011 flood.

“That amount may cover their request,” Thompson said.

Texting while driving now banned in state

There’s good news and bad news for Mississippi drivers effective July 1. A law passed by the Legislature in 2015 eliminates the state’s vehicle inspection stickers and the $5 fee that went along with them.

The bad news? Texting on cell phones while driving is now against the law, and violators could be fined $25 per violation. Posting to social media from a mobile device and using apps while driving is also now banned. The fine increases to $100 per incident in 2016.
