Chamber funded through December

The Tunica County Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development Foundation, both led by Lyn Arnold, was granted a brief reprieve this week.

On Dec. 15, supervisors failed to approve a manual check of $17,894.70 to the Chamber but recessed and came back on Monday this week to act on that manual check and several others.

The Board heard Arnold – who serves as Chamber CEO and president of the Foundation – say last week that the dual agency would have to “cease operations by the end of the year without additional allocations.”

Sheriff Hamp: Drive sober or get pulled over

The Tunica County Sheriff’s Office will be out in full force during the holidays and will join other state and local law enforcement agencies to make Mississippi highways and roads safer during the holiday season. Various checkpoints and saturations will be set up to detain those who choose to drink and drive and hopefully deter others from drinking and driving.

Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over is a public safety campaign initiative involving state, city and county law enforcement officers across the United States.  It will be implemented during a three week period encompassing the Christmas and New Year’s Holidays (December 18, 2014 through January 3, 2015).

Five percent pay cut coming Jan. 1

In the midst of a long discussion about a possible spending freeze, District 2 supervisor Cedric Burnett put forward a motion to make Chancery Clerk Rechelle Siggers the new county administrator.

“I did a little research,” Burnett said. “Eight counties have...chancery clerks as administrators. One has a chancery clerk and a comptroller.”

A request for supervisors to enact a spending freeze by current county administrator Michael Thompson had started a series of back and forth comments and questions.

Thompson said he wanted to implement a freeze on county spending “immediately,” adding that the move would help him manage the claims docket by freezing travel and purchases.
