Self defense classes offer more than protection

An opportunity to earn income was the main reason, Sophia Byrd said, she signed up for self defense classes.  What she has learned in the last several weeks, though, has been priceless.

“Money wise, I had to do it,” Byrd said, explaining that she took the required course to prepare for her job as a security team member.

“But doing it was a relief from stress without hurting someone. It gave me knowledge of what I can do to protect myself without harming someone else.... It’s also a mental class.  I’ve learned patience, stability, and awareness.”

Town studies street cart regulations

After six years of discussions, officials moved closer to a decision to allow golf carts on town streets. Mayor Chuck Cariker and Town Clerk Celia Boren proposed a golf cart ordinance to the Board of Aldermen at their meeting on July 1.

Cariker said it encompasses rules from several other Mississippi municipalities. “It’s a combination of all we’ve talked to.”

Cariker said officials from Diamondhead, Miss. say that passing regulations on golf cart operation has stopped minors from driving them on city streets.

Tunica Farm Supply celebrates 40 years in business

David Klimek, a native of Helena, Arkansas, came to Tunica Farm Supply in 1976, fresh out of the service, and never left. Now he is celebrating that business’s 40th year with another milestone – a move to a new home in Tunica County.

“W.M. ‘Sugar’ Durham opened the store in 1974,” Klimek explains, “encouraged by local customers like Lloyd Ryals, Dutch Parker and Paul Battle who were tired of driving (35 miles) to Durham’s store in Clarksdale, Mid-South Farm Supply.

“I got out of the Air Force in 1975 and came here in April 1976. I’ve tried to run the business according to Sugar’s rule of thumb: ‘If output exceeds input, then upkeep will be your downfall.’”
