Authors challenge Tunica audience

James Meredith has been called a civil rights hero, a visionary, a loner and a maverick, but what he really wants to be known as is a man on a mission from God.

Throughout his adult life, Meredith, now 80, has challenged his home state of Mississippi, first winning a lawsuit to gain admission to the University of Mississippi in the early 1960s, the first black student in the school’s history. Then he launched a 1966 march to break down fear in the black community and promote voter registration.

Service club sees beauty, poverty of island nation

A group of local teenagers shared stories, observations and images from a trip promoting “service above self” at the Tunica Rotary Club on Thursday, Sept. 19.

The Tunica Academy Interact Club traveled to the Dominican Republic in the summer of 2013 to provide water filters for citizens and help with the construction of a local hospital.

Rotary Club liaison Wes Ryals, who also traveled with the group, previously reported that they found “a desperate living situation” in the country.

Club sponsor Abbey Turner echoed Ryals’ remarks, saying that local water could not be consumed.

“We played cards at night and joked that the loser would have to brush their teeth with the water,” Turner said.

Supervisors clash over internal audit

The county’s ongoing internal audit drew sharp disagreement among members of the Board of Supervisors last week.

CPA Michael Thompson complained to the Board that “the progress of the audit was held up due to not having access to (records of) the Tourism Development Foundation.”

Thompson said the nonprofit Foundation was “heavily intertwined with the Convention & Visitors Bureau.
