Hawkins headed to the pros

Lots of little boys dream of one day becoming the professional athlete they read about or see on t.v. For Donald Hawkins of Tunica, it’s no longer a dream. On Saturday, May 10, Hawkins committed to the Philadelphia Eagles and will wear number 78 next season.

In an interview on Tuesday, May 13, Hawkins said it had been a busy three days, but the team and the city had been very welcoming. He had previously met with team representatives in Austin, where he attended the University of Texas. He’d also participated in the Eagles’ Pro Day workout and said it just seemed like a natural fit.

Town Board votes to enact garbage fee

After months of discussion on ways to increase revenue, town officials unanimously voted to enact a monthly garbage fee. It will appear on town water bills starting July 1.

At a meeting of the Board of Aldermen on May 6, Mayor Chuck Cariker recommended that the town continue twice a week garbage pick up for a rate of $10 per month. Each additional can will cost $5. Rates are the same for commercial customers as for residents.

According to town officials, the rate change will involve enacting a town ordinance. A public hearing will be set following the board’s next meeting on May 20.
