Civic club to welcome District Governor
Governor of Rotary District 6800 Marty Petrusek will speak to the Tunica Rotary Club on Thursday, Aug. 23, at noon. Petrusek, a member of the Rotary Club of Memphis-Central, has been the District Rotary Youth Leadership Academy Chairman since 2005 and was the recipient of the District 6800 Rotarian of the Year Award in 2008-09.
Hawkins: new shop needed
Tunica County Road Manager Joe Eddie Hawkins remembers a time when, in the early ‘60’s, the building he now calls his home base was a Quonset hut used by the Mississippi National Guard.
And, he also has early memories of the adjoining shop, which is still in use today by the 23 road department workers employed by the county.
Hawkins, who, last fall, took over as head of the county road department, says it is now time to replace the aging shop, which he says provides an unsafe and less-than-ideal work environment for his employees.
District ‘in the black’
Proposing to hold the line at $26 million, the Tunica County school board is poised this week to adopt a budget for the 2013 fiscal year.
District business manager Yulanda Austin laid out details last week at a hearing on the financial plan.
Austin said the amount being requested – $7.9 million – was unchanged from the 2012 budget year, but because the total assessed value of property in the county has declined, the millage figure may go up.
