Nature could furnish future energy needs

Green energy companies are giving North Mississippi a hard look, with the possibility of wind farms and hydrokinetic power in Tunica County’s future.
On August 30, the county planning commission heard a request for a conditional use permit for the “construction, development and location” of a 197-foot weather tower and related facilities on 362 acres along Seven Mile Gin Road, south of Highway 4. That request was approved.

Judge finds ‘malfeasance’ by school board

Former Rosa Fort High School principal Stan Collins may be returning to the Tunica County School District, attorney Willie Griffin of Greenville says, after Chancery Court Jon Barnwell ruled on August 15 that TCSD acted without a proper vote on Collin’s continued employment for the 2010-2011 school year.
Judge Barnwell reversed TCSD’s effective termination of Collins and ordered the school board “to make decisions consistent with the findings of the Court and any legal obligation of the Board under its contract of employment with (Collins).”
“We have sent a demand and are expecting to hear from (the board),” Griffin said in a telephone interview last week.
Griffin said he expects Tunica County Schools to pay Collins for the 2010-2011 school year and bring Collins back into the system.  Collins is not presently working anywhere else, Griffin added.

Court sides with Graves

For the second time, a local attorney has been forgiven of contempt of court charges stemming from a 2009 incident at the Tunica County Courthouse.
In late July, the Mississippi Supreme Court upheld a court of appeals ruling for Chuck Graves of Tunica. The initial decision reversed three charges against Graves, and the high court agreed that “Graves was denied his right to due process.”
Graves was charged with contempt and incarcerated by Circuit Court Judge Albert Smith. Smith serves as a judicial official for Tunica, Coahoma and Bolivar counties.
