Progress underway at GreenTech site
Preliminary work is underway on a tract of land that will soon become Tunica’s newest industry and Mississippi’s first electric car plant.
Tunica County Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Lyn Arnold confirmed Tuesday, March 27, that earth moving contractors have begun working on the new GreenTech Automotive plant, which is located on Highway 304, just east of Highway 61 in Robinsonville.
Papasan championed education in region
A longtime educator and former school superintendent was formally honored by multiple agencies at a special ceremony on Friday, March 30.
In front of a crowd of citizens and family members, Dr. Bobby Papasan was applauded as a “valuable friend of education.” Among his credits are 18 years of service as superintendent of education, countless hours in the classroom as a college professor at the University of Mississippi and acting on matters as a member of the Northwest Mississippi Community College Board of Directors.
Arrest made in armed robbery
Tunica County Sheriff’s deputies made a swift arrest following an armed robbery at a local business on March 26.
At 3:30 a.m., law enforcement officials were called to Shell/Wendy’s Service at Highway 61 and Casino Center. Witnesses at the scene reported that a chrome and nickel plated weapon was used in the crime. A suspect, Michael Bonsky of Memphis, was linked to the robbery. An undisclosed amount of cash was taken from the business.
Former deputy charged in cold case homicide
Nearly 15 years after family members discovered the lifeless body of their brother under a large oak tree on Gay Street, Tunica County Sheriff K.C. Hamp announced that a former law enforcement official has been implicated in his death.
At a press conference at the Tunica Museum on March 28, Hamp said Willie “Cat Daddy” Starks has been charged with the murder of James “JuMan” Carter of Tunica. Starks, the former chief deputy of the Tunica County Sheriff’s Department, is currently serving a 30 year sentence in the federal prison system on unrelated drug charges. His bond in the Carter case has been set at $1 million. He has also been charged with obstruction of justice.
