Still betting on Tunica

The Tunica Convention and Visitor’s Bureau and Tunica County Chamber of Commerce hosted a celebration of 20 years of gaming and tourism in Tunica on Thursday, Oct. 18, at Bluesville at the Horseshoe Casino. The event highlighted the economic progress Tunica and Tunica County has made throughout the last 20 years.
Since gaming was legalized in Mississippi in 1992, Tunica has grown from one of the poorest counties in the U.S. to a major contributor of tax dollars to the state. Gaming in Tunica County has generated $704 million in local tax revenue and 15,000 jobs.

Home Cooking: Taylor looks to ‘Get Moore’ out of cooking

As a teenager in high school, Essie West Taylor participated in a mock business exercise that piqued her interest in the banquet and catering business.
Now as an adult, Taylor is living her dream as the owner of Get Moore Catering, which she operates out of her Jacks Avenue home.
Taylor, who grew up in Saginaw, Michigan, said her love affair with cooking began at an early age when she prepared one of her grandmother’s favorite dessert recipes for family members.

Series of storms sweeps through community

Five separate tornado warning sirens blared in Tunica in three hours last Wednesday night, but the town – and the county, for the most part – escaped major damage in severe thunderstorms, high winds and quarter-sized hail that swept through the Mid-South starting at about 7:45 p.m.
“We had damage to a few trees downtown and lots of small limbs and leaves scattered,” Public Works Director Ellis Koonce said Thursday, “but no major effects except a utility pole down near the elementary school that knocked out power on the south end of town.”

Shelter revived at Cut-off

Nearly a dozen residents of Bordeaux Point at the Tunica Cut-off utilized a half century-old storm shelter in the midst of last week’s severe weather.
The shelter had not been used for years until last Thursday, when severe thunderstorms accompanied by tornado warnings blanketed the area, according to those familiar with the structure.
