Cookin with The Columns: Cool in the heat of summer
This has been the hottest week of the year, so far.
Everyone seems to be looking for an air-conditioned place to go--I’m glad I don’t have an outside job so I would have to stay out in the heat all day.
For those as old as I am, do you remember that the only place in town with air conditioning (at least in Jackson, Tennessee where I grew up) was the movie theater? It was so cool in there in the summer time, sometimes we would sit through a movie twice just to stay cool. But I guess I didn’t realize exactly how hot it was everywhere else. Schools just had a fan in front of the classroom. Even in church, we would sit with the windows open and use those “funeral home fans” to keep cool.
At home, we would sleep on a pallet in front of the screen door--no need to lock the door, nobody would come in. Thank goodness we have air conditioning most everywhere now--sure does make those Delta summer days a lot more comfortable.
