Guest Column: Schools should expose children to great debates
I am skeptical of fanatics claiming they know the absolute truth. The chief tactic of fanatics is to attack opponents with vague insults that don’t address the meat of the issue. So it appears to be with the renewed debate over “evolution.”
Evolution is in the news with the dramatic rise of Texas Gov. Rick Perry as the new Republican front-runner for president. Perry has questioned evolution and suggested that “intelligent design” should also be taught in schools. Now elements of the established media are portraying him as an ignorant flatlander who doesn’t believe in dinosaurs.
