Every sport has its own distinct equipment.  It is essential that one who is preparing to participate in a sport understand what is needed to perform adequately.  Someone showing up to play football with ice skates and a hockey stick will not only look silly, but will have a difficult time moving up and down the field.  Likewise, a person walking onto a basketball court in a football uniform, complete with padding, will not do very well.
