Minister's Moment: Soldiers of the Cross
Soldiers of the Cross
We are climbing Jacob’s ladder, soldiers of the cross.
It has become unfashionable in many parts of the Christian Church to talk about spiritual warfare. (In other parts of the Church people are going to battle against the wrong enemy, but that’s another column.) War is so objectionable to some Christians that they want no mention of it in their theology. Hymns like Onward Christian Soldiers have been removed from many hymnals. Other denominations have taken these old favorites out and suffered so much criticism that they have been added back in. Many of us have forgotten that there is such a thing as a holy war. Augustine allowed for it, and set up conditions under which war was an acceptable activity for Christians.
