Freshmen fiesta at Coahoma orientation
More than 300 first-time freshmen and their parents will be experiencing a unique overnight introduction to college life July 8-9 at Coahoma Community College ’s Summer Orientation 2010, according to CCC’s Student Affairs Division.
With broad-brimmed sombreros and cascades of chili pepper lights decorating the Student Union, orientation will be celebrating a light-hearted Mexican Fiesta theme with students and parents invited to spend the night in CCC residence halls.
The two-day event is designed specifically to give new students a head start on college life, says Dr. Greg Hudson, vice president of student affairs.
“After introducing them to Coahoma’s goals, missions, policies, admission requirements, and programs of study, it offers new students
an opportunity to register for fall classes at the end of the second day,” he continues.
Dr. Hudson says special sessions just for parents address questions about admissions, academics, housing, financial aid, fees, expenses, student life, athletics, student health, and insurance.
“The overnight stay offers parents an opportunity to experience the safe and orderly environment of campus life,” he says.
Check-in is scheduled from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Thursday, July 8, in the Student Union, with a general session at 1 p.m., group sessions at 4 p.m., a cook-in at 5:15 p.m., group sessions at 6:15 p.m., and Mexican Fiesta entertainment at 7 p.m.
Following breakfast Friday, July 8, is testing at 8 a.m., group sessions at 8:30 a.m., parent meetings with administrators at 9 a.m., and registration in the Reid Gymnasium at 10 a.m.
