Northwest scholarship honors late farmer
The Mike Perry John Deere Endowed Scholarship has been established through the Northwest Mississippi Community College Foundation by his brother Whit, other family members, and by a host of friends.
Mike Perry was born Oct. 27, 1954 to Barbara and Frank (Bud) Perry of Tunica. The third of four sons, he began farming with his father after high school. He married Annette Daniels of Tunica, and the couple had five children—Jason, Betsy, Justin, Brett and Blake. He was a member of Evansville Baptist Church in the community of Cottonville.
“Mike was a wonderful brother. He would make it a point to communicate with us on a regular basis,” said Whit Perry, who is an instructor in Northwest’s Heating, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technology program. “He was very close to his brothers. I once told him that if God were to tell me I could do it over and choose a brother that I would tell God to make him just like Mike. He was the type of brother who could laugh and cry with you. He was open and honest.”
An avid hunter and fisherman, Mike loved traveling to the coast each summer after his crop was ‘laid by’ to fish with Capt. Mike Foto, owner of Fish Finders Charters in Biloxi. He always took his youngest son Blake, his friend Taylor Watson and many times one of his brothers or nephew, Bud. This was always the highlight of the year for him, other than holidays with his family.
“My brother was a working farmer,” said Whit. “If you wanted to ride around with him you would usually be on a tractor or some other kind of farm machinery. He wasn’t the gentleman type farmer. He worked hard and was very successful at his farming endeavors.”
The endowment will be awarded to students enrolled in the Agricultural Technology program with an emphasis on the John Deere training program.
