Redistricting in Tunica County will now be in the hands of Ellis Turnage, an attorney from Cleveland, Miss.
Board President James Dunn recommended Turnage at the supervisors’ Aug. 15 meeting and proposed that he be hired for a sum not to exceed $25,000.
Board attorney Andy Dulaney explained that redistricting became necessary when the 2010 census was conducted. Population shifts within the five supervisor districts made Tunica County out of compliance with certain aspects of the Voting Rights Act. Prior to county elections in 2011, officials had begun the process. Dulaney said Tunica County had been included but was recently dismissed from a redistricting lawsuit on the district level.
