Minister's Corner: Crucifying the Flesh
Crucifying the Flesh
We have no concept today of the horrors of crucifixion. We can read about it; we can compare it to other forms of torturous death; we can try to imagine what it must have been like; but we cannot feel it or experience it as someone in the first century would have. It was, from all reports, a horrible way to die. The victim was tied or nailed to a cross and left there to suffocate slowly, as his weight put so much pressure on his breathing system that he could finally no longer catch his breath. It took hours to die, and every second was painful.
