Obama wins second term
On Election Night 2012, President Barack Obama won both the electoral count and the popular vote over Republican challenger Mitt Romney in the November 6 General Election. Unofficial totals (at press time Wednesday) show Obama with 303 electoral votes nationwide to Romney’s 206. The popular vote was closer: Obama, 59,725,608, or 50 percent, to Romney, 57,098,650, 48 percent.
Turnout was robust across the country but not as high as in 2008, according to national media reports.
Voters also returned U.S. Senator Roger Wicker and 2nd District Congressman Bennie Thompson to their posts in Congress. The Democrat Party retained control of the Senate, 51 seats to 45 for the Republicans, while the Republican Party held on to their majority in the House, 232 to 191.
