Students: be aware of FAFSA scams
Students applying for financial aid for college are urged to beware of companies that guarantee financial aid or charge a fee to assist with completing applications.
“The Free Application for Federal Student Aid, known as the FAFSA, is the first step toward determining eligibility for financial aid for college. The application is just what it says – FREE. Several companies are luring students to their websites with official-sounding Internet addresses and then charging a fee for completion of the FAFSA,” noted Ann Hendrick, Director of College Planning Services for ESF Get2College, Mississippi’s nonprofit resource for free college planning assistance.
