Editorial: Cool heads, wise decisions needed to ride out crisis
Sometimes it might be nice to be a dictator, some small nation’s leader who issues edicts that are obeyed without question and whose every word is law. It would certainly be easier than the system we work under in America, where three branches of government – the executive, legislative and judicial – all play a part in the process.
We are a nation “of the people, by the people and for the people,” and our leaders would do well to remember that, in truth, they work for us and not the other way around.
But if we were in charge, with no one to answer to, as dictators are, we might issue a few edicts, and magically, someone who was once an ally disappears into prison or worse, an army moves against its own people, or our enemies are beheaded without benefit of judge or jury.
