Cookin with The Columns: For Your Donut Fix
Charles and I grew up in Jackson, Tennessee and I recently found a Facebook page that’s called “Jackson, Tennessee is my hometown”.
So I went down the nostalgia trail by reading back through all the postings of things people remember about Jackson. One of my favorite places to remember is a donut shop called Dixie Cream Donuts that was by the railroad tracks near downtown. I think I’ve told you before that on Sunday night after church we would go by there and get donuts that were hot out of the grease and dipped in that yummy sugar icing. Can’t beat a good hot donut. Most of the recipes for donuts involve yeast dough that has to rise and take a long time to make. But this recipe is one we have made at our house for years and years--I even used to make them when I was teaching school with my kindergarteners and they would just poke a hole in the biscuit with their finger and make a donut out of it.
