Town proposes $5 million budget

Officials with the Town of Tunica have proposed a budget of just over $5 million, down approximately $200,000 from last year’s projections.
Mayor Chuck Cariker attributes the reduction to the downward cycle in gaming revenue.
“Last year, we used $3 million as our number for gaming revenue. This year, we’ve lowered that  to $2.8 million,” Cariker said.
In 2006, the gaming revenue projected by the Town was $3.9 million.

County attraction may change hands

The Tunica County Tourism Commission may soon be knee deep in the Mighty Mississippi following action by the Board of Supervisors on Aug. 13.
Supervisors agreed to submit a proposal to the Tourism Commission for operations at the Tunica RiverPark. The Tourism Commission has been handling the marketing for the facilty for several years.

Free seminar focuses on growing problem

Tunica Main Street and Tunica Chamber of Commerce are co-sponsoring a Gang Awareness Seminar that is free to the public.  The seminar will be held at the Tunica Rotary Club Building at 6 p.m. on Monday, August 23. The two speakers will be Marvin Overstreet and Donnie Mullins.
“I heard these men speak at the Lions Club and thought that what they had to say was so interesting and informative,” Main Street director Lynn Ryals said. “Several people with businesses in town have asked to have these two men back to speak to everyone.”
Overstreet began his law enforcement career with the Wayne County, Ms. Sheriff’s Department, where he worked as a dispatcher. He attended the University of Southern Mississippi and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice. He also completed the Ms Law Enforcement Training Academy.
