Family Dollar coming to Tunica
Family Dollar Stores will soon become the fourth discount retailer to have a location within the corporate boundaries of the town of Tunica, joining Fred’s, Dollar General and Super 10.
Construction crews were on site last week moving dirt and preparing footers for a foundation before rainy conditions stopped their progress on the site of the new store on Highway 61.
Sturgill’s love for Italian fare lifelong
As a child, longtime Tunica resident Lynn Sturgill spent much of her time moving from place to place as a result of her father’s job.
From Memphis to Boston, to Florida, North Carolina, New York and Texas, Sturgill’s early life was filled with moves across the country as her father worked to turn around failing Ford Motor Company dealerships as an employee of the then-largest Ford dealer in the country, Hull-Dobbs Ford.
The Taxman cometh
Notices for 2012 taxes started landing in local mailboxes this week, and some county residents are experiencing “sticker shock.”
In August, Tunica County advertised a proposed increase of 15.83 mills, from 53.74 mills to 69.57 mills.
County administrator Clifton Johnson said the Board of Supervisors approved and he delivered to the tax assessor an actual millage of 66.49 on county property (except in Robinsonville). In the town of Tunica, the actual rate is 66.24 mills, slightly less than the proposed increase.
Historic district proposed
Town officials will consider establishing a local historic district, following a report Tuesday by planning director Bob Barber.
Barber told the Board that the town’s existing preservation commission met recently, a requirement for Tunica’s Certified Local Government status with the state.
“You enacted a preservation ordinance in 2005 or 2006 and established a national historic district,” Barber explained.
That district is bounded on the south by Peabody Street, on the east by Highway 61, on the north by Mockingbird Street, and on the west by Kestevan Alley.
