Supervisors seek grant, bond reissue
Two public notices submitted from Tunica County and running in this week’s paper (see Page 5) may pique citizens’ interest because they deal with loans and grant funds. But according to Board attorney Andy Dulaney, in the Notice to Taxpayers concerning validation of bonds, citizens are being notified that county officials plan to refinance two prior bond issues, in order to save money.
“The county is not adding more debt,” Dulaney explained. “This refinancing will actually result in a net savings to the county of $200,000.”
Tunica County moves up in health rankings
According to the fourth annual County Health Rankings released by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute, DeSoto County has the healthiest residents in Mississippi, while Quitman County residents are the least healthy in the state.
Tunica County ranked at 70 of 81 counties which received ratings. In 2012, the county was rated 80 of 82 counties considered and 72 in 2011.

Locally, Tunica County posted an unadjusted unemployment rate of 20.1, putting it over 20 percent for the second consecutive month. Adjusted figures for January listed the unemployment rate at 17.5 percent.
