Local farm family utilizing new ag innovation
The Natural Resource Conservation Service has partnered with a Tunica farmer to implement what, when completed, will become the first comprehensive tail water recovery system in the county.
The project, which is located on 500 acres of land owned by Mike Boyd, just off Bonnie Blue Road in central Tunica County, utilizes a complex system of ditches, pads–or small levees–and pumps to divert water to and from a water retention reservoir on an as-needed basis.
Unemployment rate soars
Tunica County experienced more than a rise in river waters after the near-historic Flood of 2011. With the forced closure of all nine of Tunica’s casinos and other affected businesses, unemployment claims reached a historic high for the month of May, eclipsing all other Mississippi counties’ figures by double digits.
According to Mississippi Employment Security Commission statistics, Tunica County posted the highest number of unemployment claims in the state for the month of May with a 31.1 percent unemployment rate. During this same period of time, the Mississippi state average was 10 percent, with the next-highest posting behind Tunica coming from Claiborne County with a 17.7 percent unemployment rate.
Parade kicks off Fourth festivities
The streets of downtown Tunica will be painted in red, white and blue on Friday, July 1 as the annual Independence Day parade returns.
Tunica Main Street invites kids to bring their bicycles, tricycles, wagons, big wheels, strollers, etc. to the MarketPlace beginning at 5 p.m. Parade participants can then decorate their transportation in all the holiday razzle dazzle.
Native battling for USA
On a day when most Americans are enjoying the fun and festivities associated with the anniversary of our nation’s independence, one of Tunica’s native sons will be fighting it out for the good ole US of A.
Fortunately, this battle only involves the perils of cooking over a hot grill, with the only carnage being the pounds of pork and poultry being prepared for the “United States Versus Canada Barbecue Contest” held in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada on July 4.
“We’re cooking about 670 pounds of ribs, roughly 180 butts and 5,000 pieces of chicken,” said John David Wheeler, whose “Natural Born Grillers” cooking team will be competing in the inaugural US Versus Canada international cook-off. “We’re going to be feeding about 4,000 people and competing against teams from Canada. It’s going to be a big deal.”
