Rivergate Festival returns with mix of music, favorites
From Southern soul to country sounds, music is the focus of 2011’s Rivergate Festival in downtown Tunica on April 15-16.
Ocean Street kicks off the festival Friday night with a unique blend of rock and soul in a live show that has livened up beach towns and colleges coast to coast. Their single “Till I’m Gone” has been featured on a sampler CD alongside Paul McCartney and Marc Cohen and new artists Josh Ritter and KT Tunstall. The band was hand selected by Rolling Stones keyboardist Chuck Leavell to play a fundraiser last fall at his Georgia ranch.
GreenTech Automotive still eyeing Tunica
The selection of Tunica County as the site of a multi-million dollar automotive plant in 2009 was a coup for local economic development officials. GreenTech Automotive unveiled prototypes of its hybrid and electric vehicles on June 6, 2009, and announced plans for a manufacturing facility on the county’s Metro Mega Site near Robinsonville in North Tunica County.
Since then, little information has been forthcoming about the project, until GreenTech opened a local office on Highway 61 here late last year. Now company officials are making a push to purchase land in the county and start site preparations by the end of June, according to GreenTech’s assistant plant manager Lindsey Garner.
Meanwhile, the company has leased the vacant Dover Elevator plant in Horn Lake and plans to have test models coming off the assembly line in July.
“We’ll have full production on one shift in December, at least,” Garner told Rotarians last week.
Locals reach out to Japan
Tunica County will have an opportunity to reach out across the world on Saturday, March 26.
Locals Yoriko and Michael Sides will host a yard sale to help Japan at their home at 1142 Mockingbird Street beginning at 8 a.m. All proceeds will go to help relief efforts in the country struck by an earthquake and tsunami on March 11.
