Williams celebrates 100th birthday
If I had been born at another day and time, I wouldn’t be here to pay tribute to my mother, Emma Louise Williams.
I also wouldn't be around to (when I go over to give her a bath) see her big toothless smile and hear her say, “Hey Baby Dear” (the name she calls me).
I wouldn’t be able to see the covers she has folded around her waist thinking they are an apron full of turnip greens that she has picked for dinner.
Sisters carry on legacy
Since as early as they can remember, sisters Kate Thomas and Angela Morris have made time in the kitchen a regular part of life.
Growing up in Tunica County, the sisters were introduced to cooking by their mother but also gained knowledge of the culinary arts from their grandparents and a family maid.
“I was probably five or six,” recalled Thomas of one of her most memorable experiences as a child. “We lived in Dundee and we had a maid named Mama Mandy and she made the best greens and tea cakes. We went to her house one time and they had a hog killing. They used every part of the pig and made sausage, ham, cracklings – everything. That was something I remember well, but I can’t ever remember not cooking.”
McKinney named Freshman All-American Freshman
Standout athlete Benardrick McKinney of Tunica has been named to FoxSportsNext’s Freshman All America First Team and is believed to be the first player from Mississippi State University to win the honor.
McKinney, a redshirt freshman linebacker for the Bulldogs, was also named to the All-SEC Freshman team, the first State linebacker since Jamon Hughes in 2006.
Sheriff: Stay sober or else
The Tunica County Sheriff’s Office will be setting up various check points throughout the county seeking impaired drivers. “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” is a national campaign that is held around major holidays.
