There is a huge market in this country for self-help books.  Americans are interested in improving themselves—so much so that the shelves in bookstores and book departments are full of titles that begin with How to….  We don’t even mind admitting that we don’t know anything about a subject.  Witness the success of the __for Dummies series.  I’ve even recommended Music Theory for Dummies to prospective students who want to get a head start on their college career as music majors.
It’s good that we want to improve our golf game, our tennis game, or our health or conversation skills.  It’s also good that we seek the advice of experts in order to make changes in those areas of our lives where we feel we need to grow.
