Minister's Moment: Part of the Family
Part of the Family
John 14:15-24
Most of us enjoy being part of a family. Whether our birth family, our “marriage” family, or some other, we know how enriching and comforting the experience can be. As someone once said, “Home is where, when you go there, they have to take you in.” That’s a good partial definition, but it misses the point. When we’re home with our family we should not only be surrounded by people we love and who love us, but we should also feel the warmth of that love filling our entire beings.
In today’s passage, the Last Supper has been eaten, and Judas has left to carry out his betrayal. Now Jesus is giving his final message to his faithful companions. We know, from hindsight, that they still won’t get it. They won’t understand what Jesus is telling them until after the resurrection. Still, he has to try. One last time he attempts to prepare them for his death, his resurrection, and his ascension.
