This is one of those stories about Jesus that we’d rather forget.
It starts out well, with Jesus taking on the Pharisees and teaching them a lesson—again!  They complain that his disciples don’t wash their hands before they eat, and he reminds them that hand washing is not mentioned in the Torah, but honoring one’s parents is—in fact, it’s one of the basic rules.  The Pharisees, perverting the law to their own use, have substituted tithing for caring for their parents.
