September marks local, national milestones
Anniversaries abound this month–the sixth anniversary since Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast and New Orleans, the 20th anniversary of new ownership of this newspaper (see Page 2 for special 20th anniversary features), and the upcoming 10th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks on America.
On the morning of August 30, 2005, Katrina was storming ashore near the Louisiana-Mississippi state line, claiming over 1800 lives and causing $81 billion worth of damage. Katrina ultimately proved to be the costliest natural disaster in U.S. history.
