Public, town talk water
Citizens’ questions got answers during a public hearing on proposed water rate changes on June 17.
Mayor Chuck Cariker thanked people for attending to express their concerns and share their opinions. Cariker said the move to change water and sewer rates stemmed from a 2009 Attorney General’s opinion stating that municipalities can not charge any less than what it costs to operate their water systems.
“This administration and the previous administration have been working to come up with a way to bring us into compliance with that,” Cariker said, noting that the town has been supplementing the system’s operating costs by $600,000 to $700,000 a year.
