Smith reminds crowd freedom is core of military
“Freedom has a taste that the protected will never know,” retired Air Force Lt. Col. Richard E. “Gene” Smith told a crowd of about 150 at Tunica’s annual Veterans Day program.
Smith, a native of Tunica, knows about that taste of freedom. He was captured by the North Vietnamese after his fighter plane was shot down during the Vietnam War and held five and a half years as a prisoner of war.
