Local History: Annals filled with fascinating people
The stories of colorful Tunicans who populate our history continue to fascinate visitors. Three who contributed significantly to local lore are Harold Clanton, Mrs. Rosa Fort, and Calvin Norwood.
Harold “Hardface” Clanton. and his juke joint were staples of blues entertainment in Tunica County for over forty years.
Clanton, who earned his nickname “Hardface” from the stone cold face he wore while playing poker, had an entrepreneurial spirit. While serving in the Army during World War II, he saved all of his income and opened a juke joint on his return home. His business savvy quickly made him one of the county’s most successful men.
