Heart screening for student athletes
Memphis, Tenn. - Athletic participation has doubled in the last 10 years. There are 7.7 million high school athletes and 450,000 college athletes. Athlete health screening has been a hot topic in the U.S. in an effort to decrease and detect athletes who are at risk for sudden cardiac death. Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital Pediatric Cardiologist Alex Arevalo, MD, discussed screening guidelines and when athletes need to see a cardiologist.
“I believe every athlete should be screened,” Arevalo said. “It is important to know if a child has any symptoms that should be addressed by a doctor.”
