Minister's Moment: Proud of Our Humility
Proud of Our Humility
1 Peter 5:1-7
“I’m humble and proud of it” is a marginally humorous statement my friends and I used to repeat when we were younger and didn’t know better.
It sounded funny at the time (and still does, in a way) because of the ridiculous juxtaposition of the two words. How can you be proud of humility?
The problem, of course, is that we know people who fit this description. There are too many who are proud of their humility. They wear their (supposed) humility like a badge of honor, constantly throwing it in our faces until we are tempted to use that statement to describe them. Perhaps this is what robs the “joke” of its humor. When so many fit the definition it ceases to be humorous and becomes tragically serious.
