Cold weather campout celebrates 25 years
The weather was cold, the skies were gray, and periods of rain, sleet and snow attempted to dampen our spirits, but that didn’t deter over 20 local men recently when they showed up in numbers to participate in the 2011 Cold Weather Campout.
The event also marked the 25th year anniversary of making friends and memories with Old Man River.
When Steve O’Neal, Bill Griggs and I decided to go camping on the Mississippi on the weekend following the close of deer season so many years ago (the first weekend in February), we just thought it would be a neat way to wind down from another long hunting season, a way to break the monotony that was sure to set in before spring arrived. Never did we realize that deciding to go camping in sub freezing temperatures (it was 17 degrees that first night!) on the banks of the mother of all rivers would be something that would appeal to many, if any, of our friends. Let’s just say that we have been pleasantly surprised!
